The vision for Playa Las Tortugas originated with a man named Robert Hancock. He was not your typical developer. Particularly when it comes to Mexico where you frequently see hotels built literally on the beach. Roberta took a very progressive approach to create a community that values the environment and tasteful planning. Today, the owners of Playa Las Tortugas continue to adhere to his philosophy.

Turtles.

True to its name, Playa Las Tortugas cares about turtles. From the beginning we have supported the turtle hatchery, which is situated immediately adjacent to the community. We support them with funding and guests participate in the nightly release of the baby turtles, which brings added revenue for the hatchery.

Beach Setbacks.

One of the first things you notice about Playa Las Tortugas is that the beach front villas are not built directly on the beach. This has an enormous impact as a buffer for wildlife but also visually it makes the beach more beautiful. Smart planning.

Composting.

In the United States only about 12% of households have access to composting services. Which is a shame because 1/2 of all waste is compostable! At Playa Las Tortugas 100% of organic material is diverted from the land fill. From coconut husks to mango pits, from fish bones to coffee grounds, it all goes back to nature.

Waste Treatment.

Many communities in Mexico are experiencing rapid growth from tourism and finding their ability to handle waste is overwhelmed. At Playa Las Tortugas we have our very own waste treatment and monitoring program to ensure the surrounding environment stays healthy.

No Plastic Water Bottles.

We all know the impact microplastics are having on the environment. Playa Las Tortugas is making plastic water bottles obsolete by providing a drinking water service for each villa. Large 10 gallon jugs are delivered, and each villa can place reusable glass cisterns in the refrigerator so everybody has access to chilled drinking water.
